3D ART CASE

I’m excited to show you guys this small serie of artworks based on one of my characters.

Those who follow me on Instagram probably have already seen some of the process in my feed.

I thought it would be fun to summarise the journey and brake it down for you.

So have fun reading and leave a comment if you want.

intro picture

It all started with the idea of making a TOY sculpture. It was actually My son who inspired me to make a Toy because he collects toy figures. I thought it would be fun to create a Toy figure out of one of my characters and chose Simon because he was the first that I brought into life and I already had some content to work with.

ART IS A PROCESS
NOT A PRODUCT.

So, I bought some clay and started shaping the face. I shaped the body, but it didn’t come out as I wanted. It needed to be a lot bigger in order to have a stable figure, so I decided to put that aside for another day. The head on the other hand, came out really nice, so I decided to practise one of my other ideas and combine this head. I did a lot of campaign window designing in the past and the idea is to make a scaled down version of the same principle.

These Art Case Displays contain 3 Dimensional objects, where I used the character Simon as main focus point. Around him I created a few scene in different themes. The challenge I set myself up to was to create a visual interesting composition with different textures and materials, making it entirely by hand. I have included some elements of the animation video content created earlier like the graffiti inspired callouts.

I decided to make a mold of the face out of rubber and resin. This allowed me to produce a few equal heads and make the collection a bit more diverse and giving me the possibility to try out and play around with multiple ideas.

After the heads had hardened in the mold, I took them out and sanded the imperfections, clean them up and started painting the hats in different colors.

BUILDING
THE BASE.

The framework I used as a base is custom made. It needed a certain depth and there were no standard frames for this, so I had no other option than to build them myself.

I went looking for materials in the hardware store. Ones I had gathered all the materials I sawn the wood (in miter) to size, glued, stapled and sanded it, after which the framework could be primed and finished it off with a smooth matte black lacquer paint job.

The frames came out really nice and have that phat look “like the sole of a Vans shoe” that I was hoping to achieve

INSPIRATION &
DIRECTION

I thought it would be cool to create different theme’s. The first Case I did was inspired by one of my first animations. For those who diden’t see it you can watch the animation so you understand where I’m coming from.

CALLOUTS

I took this idea from when I designed campaigns, I would normally use Window vinyls on window for message and callouts, but in this case I did not want to use stickers, but create them by hand.

I used some acrylic markers and drew the graffiti callouts “mirrored” on the inside of the glass with acrylic paint and markers. And ‘BAMMM’ This way they are legible from the outside and you are able to clean the ‘SWEET’ case without wiping off the paint! And it just looks ‘DOPE’!

COMPOSITION IS FROZEN IMPROVISATION.

So, now it’s time to make things a bit more interesting.

I wanted to create a setting. Composition in this stage is important. I used different shapes and forms to create depth using the different materials I gathered.

Case #1. BAMMM Inspired by my first animation

I used a black silky fabric as a basic background and tried to create that spiral motion from the animation with different materials. I found this cool clay in bright colours en started to play around with it.

ART IS THE EXPRESSION
OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT.

The chosen environments that I’ve used in the other two artworks have to do with my love for nature and in particular the Jungle and wild life animals. This is my way to express my concerns for the problems nature is facing.

Case #2. SWEET Jungle / Camo

Case #3. DOPE Safari/Animal

Throughout the whole process I made sure the head is the main point of attention.

Now it was a matter of making sure that all the different elements are well screwed, glued and put together.

And I attached a hanging hook and rubber pads to the back of the case.

So, this was the process of the build of 3 unique Mr. Simon P Art Case displays Made entirely by hand. I had a lot of fun making these artworks and they came out to be really cool collector items. Hope you liked reading this blog and please let me know your thoughts in the comment section below.
